About Burns
2011 marks the 162nd anniversary for Burns Church. Wow, only 162 years young... still growing, still changing, and still longing to be a relevant gathering place for God in an obscure hamlet! See a full account of our history here.
Burns Presbyterian Church still remains an active member of The Presbyterian Church in Canada denomination.
From the early 1800’s to present day, Ashburn and Brooklin have been destination locations for settlers seeking that ideal spot to create a home, establish roots and build a foundation established in strength, hope, integrity, wholeness and provision. Instinctively these early settlers hungered for a place to gather together and celebrate their love for God. A key within the spiritual foundation at Burns has always been a desire to worship the Lord, biblically, creatively, prayerfully, relevantly and passionately.
This is true to this day as 2011 sees us growing again. We'll spend some time out of our building while we do some major renovations - in the meantime worshiping at Myrtle United Church while we upgrade the building - mainly adding a lift to make our building more accessible to people with mobility issues.
The Reverend Jeremy Bellsmith
a.k.a. "Jeremy."
I was raised in the church (both my father and great-grandfather were ministers!) and love studying Christian history. I have experienced the Church to be an amazing group of passionate and devoted followers of Christ's way, despite the struggles we can often experience.
I've served on the ministry staff of two congregations over the past fifteen years and most recently completed a season in The Vine office of The Presbyterian Church in Canada where I researched and wrote a variety of resources for congregational ministry. In the last decade and a half, I've also finished my university and seminary degrees, married my amazing wife Crystal, and have been given two wonderful kids: Emma and Elliot. I enjoy a variety of influences, including art, music, reading, gardening, martial arts, history and the study of religions. You may see some of my various passions expressed in my speaking and worship leading. I love biking, film, story, hiking, running... it's amazing where we find God when we're looking! I've also loved the huge variety of expressions we find in both the Christian tradition and our contemporary culture. I believe we can employ these in ways that are meaningful for people from a variety of ages and backgrounds. By intentionally doing so, we're reminded that the whole of our lives is worship and service to God and others.
As we encounter Christ together each week, my prayer is that we will be encouraged and equipped with faith and hope to authentically love our community. In this way, we can follow Christ throughout the week, loving and participating with however God is working.
I'd love the opportunity to get to know you! Feel free to contact me to set up a time. I like food and coffee, and enjoy sharing both with friends, old and new.
Kevin Gabriel - Music Director
I was born into a strong Christian family and have been raised going to church every Sunday from that day. My parents are both incredibly strong and faithful believers and have been one of the biggest blessings in my life. In 2004 I moved to Ontario from Saskatchewan, and in 2009 I began a bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences at UOIT with the intention of pursuing a career in medicine.
Despite being raised in such a godly family, my faith in the Lord was very hypocritical and external until my first year of university. Through various circumstances and people placed in my life, my faith was radically changed and, though His grace, I began to “take up my cross” and follow Him.
I have played the guitar for 8 years, and the Lord has provided opportunity in the last few years to combine that skill with a desire to praise Him. I firmly believe that worship is a full-time occupation for those who place their faith in Christ. It is not limited to Sunday mornings or to corporate singing. My desire is that all people would “know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.” (Philippians 3:10)

I've been a part of Burns Church since sitting in the front pew at the age of 2 1/2 years. I was baptized here at the age of 5 and later confirmed my beliefs at 13. That's a long time ago! I love being a part of such a wonderful congregation. There have been many people who have seen me grow up - laughed and cried with me - and a lot of new faces along the way as well. I've dragged (almost all the time willingly) my son to Burns since he was born in 1998. The opportunity to be the church "secretary" was presented to me in March 1999 as our then minister was retiring at the end of April. The job title has evolved slightly, the work has changed a bit as technology evolves, but I'm still here! |
